Shell Gas Stations Closing To Become Electric Charging Stations?
This certainly is startling news. Shell, number three gas distributor in Michigan, announced that they are going to begin shutting down at least 1000 gas station across the country. Yikes!
Is it that they can't make any money by pumping gas anymore? Certainly not! Oil companies are making huge profits, so a big NO to that.
Shell, ever since the 1880s, has been a part of the oil and gas business in some way.
They are certainly engrained into our Michigan way of life today being our third largest gas station company with BP and Exxon just ahead.
But this time the closings are something else.....electricity. They want to create bigger and better charging stations for electric vehicles, cars, trucks, in a big way.
What about Michigan?
According to our sister radio station, WBCK, Scrape Hero data says Shell has 413 locations in the Mitten State in 232 cities. In all, Shell has 13,000 U.S. locations and 45,000 Shell-branded locations worldwide, so closing 1000 stations is a drop in the old bucket.
Naturally, Shell hasn't said which or where they will close stations, but as they open, or convert stations to charging EV's, WBCK said It does appear that Shell will only close locations that are corporately owned by Shell directly. Locally owned convenience stores that sell Shell-branded fuel do not appear to be impacted now or during this process.
Is there that much need for more charging stations?
According to MichAuto.com, our state has 33,100 electric vehicles on the road in 2024, but we only rank 24th in the country for EV charging stations, despite us being the #1 investor of electric vehicle production.
So, it's possible that pretty soon we'll see a big EV sign at a station instead of the big yellow sea shell!
