Firefighters Warn Michigan Residents: Unplug This Fire Hazard IMMEDIATELY
For those of us who own homes, or even those who rent, the electrical situation is one that should be inspected and properly investigated to know whether or not it is up to code.
The unfortunate thing is once an electrical system in Michigan passes code upon inspection. There is never any need to make sure that it’s up to code again when renting. This is the situation that I recently faced, where I was forced to add extenders into the ungrounded outlets in the wall in every room.

Not only was this a major fire hazard, but because some of the outlets were few and far between I was constantly using extension cords and power strips, which was even more dangerous and more of a fire hazard.
Firefighters are giving reminders to everyone who was in a similar situation of things that should not be plugged into a power strip because, even on a grounded line, it can cause a potential fire.

Space heaters should never be plugged into a power strip, nor should they be placed on furniture or carpeting. A hard stable service is what you want, and unplugged when you’re not using it.

Extension cords are another thing that should not go into a power strip or the other way around. I wish I would’ve known this for the past 16 months because I didn’t have any other choice. But extension cords in reality are meant to be used temporarily. So try to avoid continuous use of them

It’s also important to unplug all heat-producing technology. Keeping things like an electric teapot, coffee maker, microwave, and hairstyling equipment unplugged is a guarantee that you won’t have to worry about an electrical surge.

Also, as I mentioned before, take advantage of the three-prong outlets, and remember that like myself, plugging an ungrounded cord into a grounded extension, doesn’t make it grounded. The three-prong cord needs to be able to plug into a grounded outlet for you to stay safe.
Also, it goes without saying, but don’t use any damaged cords, or a plug with a broken prong. Just spend a few dollars and get a new one. You can read more about their tips here.
