Michigan Travel Alert: 50 Cities Crawling With Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are nasty little biters that not only like to suck your blood while you sleep like tiny little vampires, but they also leave disgusting entrails and evidence of their infestations. Unfortunately, Michigan is a hotbed for them, and according to Orkin, there are three cities in the Mitten on their 50 most bed bug-infested list where you'll want to thoroughly inspect your lodgings before resting your head on a pillow or even bringing your bags in.

And in case you didn't know, it's always a good idea to inspect your AirBnB, Verbo, hotel room, or even the guest room in your aunt's house for bed bugs because once these little blood suckers set up camps somewhere, they're harder to evict that a Michigan squatter.
Knowing the Signs of a Michigan Bed Bug Infestation
Before you dive into that "luxury" hotel bed, channel your inner Sherlock Holmes. First, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests that if you have to bring your bags up with you before you inspect your room, ditch your bags in the bathroom—the one safe zone from bed bugs (assuming it's not carpeted). Then, peel back the sheets and inspect the mattress seams and corners like you're hunting for treasure.
Spoiler: it's not gold. Look for tiny, reddish stains (yuck), black specks (bed bug poop, yay!), or live bed bugs playing hide-and-seek. If you spot any, congrats—your vacation just became a horror film.
