Get Ready Michigan: Changes Coming to Your Netflix Subscription

If you're tired of streaming platforms making changes to their subscription plans, you're not the only one.

Michigan residents will now have to endure yet another change coming to Netflix. While it's not a huge change, it could affect millions of subscribers.

Many Michigan Netflix customers are still trying to adjust to the company's sharing crackdown. In the summer of 2023, Netflix began cracking down on password sharing by no longer allowing users to share their accounts with people outside of their households.

What Changes Are Coming to Netflix?

If you currently have the cheapest advertising-free plan that Netflix offers, this change is going to affect you. According to CNN, the company will start phasing out this plan for subscribers.

So, the Basic tier, which costs $11.99 a month is no longer available.

The company no longer accepts new sign-ups for the Basic plan. Instead, they're pushing customers to the ad-supported plan, which costs $6.99 per month. However, existing users are allowed to keep the basic plan until January.

I think what they’re really hoping is that people will upgrade to their more expensive plans.

This is what their pricing tier now looks like:

Standard with ads*: $6.99 / month
Standard: $15.49 / month
Premium: $22.99 / month

I've been using Netflix since the early 2000s, back when they would send DVDs to your house, a program that started in 1998. Even with all the streaming platform competition, I find it would be very difficult to pull the plug. However, if they start charging more than $25 for their premium service, I'm out.
