Michigan Mom and Son Share Special Bond as They Graduate Together
It was a moment that blended personal triumph and family pride. A Michigan mother and her son crossed the finish line together, each earning degrees and walking across the stage at Grand Valley State University. It was an achievement that not only represented academic success but also an enduring bond between family members.
Sam Cooper shared a milestone with his mother, Kristi Cooper, making it a day of celebration that few families get the opportunity to experience.
Michigan Mom and Son Earn College Degrees Together
Kristi Cooper told WZZM-TV that she had been looking forward to graduation day for two years.
"Once I realized the timing lined up, I knew we’d be walking that stage together," she said.
Sam earned his bachelor's degree from GVSU, while his mom earned her second master's degree, making it her fourth college degree overall.
While it's normal for parents to feel emotional as their children accomplish goals, the day was especially meaningful for Kristi.
"I was choked up for sure," she recalled. "Hearing the commencement music, seeing Sam... I was just teary-eyed, but so, so happy for him."
College Study Buddies
Sam and his mom told the TV station they've been each other's support systems over the last few years, studying together and motivating each other through late-night sessions and exam prep.
"My mom set a great precedent with all her degrees," Sam said. "I'd like to get a master's or MBA one day. Maybe not four degrees, though," he laughed.
