Michigan Lawmakers Advance Cell Phone Ban With Bipartisan Support
Many state lawmakers in Lansing want more restrictions placed on cell phone use in public school, and they want a uniform statewide approach. The push began in the Michigan State Senate with a yes vote to limit the use of cell phones while students are at school.

Yesterday (5/14/2025) Committee Members of the Michigan House of Representatives voted yes to approve the House version of proposal which was sponsored by Republican Representative Mark Tisdel of Rochester Hills.
What Restrictions Will This New Proposal Mean For Cell Phones In Michigan Schools?
Based on Tisdel's proposal, the House version would not allow Michigan students in elementary or middle school to have access to cell phones or wireless devices basically at anytime during school hours. The restrictions cover class time, recess, lunch and between classes.

On the other hand, Michigan's high school students would be restricted from their phones and wireless devices only during instructional time in the classroom.
When Could These New Restrictions Impact Michigan Students
With bipartisan support in all branches of Michigan's government, this could quickly move up to the Governor's desk. Media sources report that this could be in effect by the start of the school year this fall.
