Michigan Tavern Offers Nostalgic Replica of Beloved K-Mart Sub Sandwich
Many native Michiganders can think back nostalgically about the K-Mart sub. The retail chain founded in Garden City and formerly based in Troy may have been known for their cafeteria offerings as well as their blue light specials.
As the chain has closed all locations in the mainland United States (they remain open in the US Virigin Island and Guam) that means long gone is the chain's food service.

Perhaps the most popular food offering was its submarine sandwich. Replica recipes show up often on social media with a knock-off that includes ham, salami and bologna for the meat; yellow American cheese - Kraft Singles, lettuce, tomato, white onion, pickles and banana peppers for the vegetables and yellow mustard for the condiment.
Most importantly, the sub must be rolled in plastic wrap.

Some sub shops have their own spin on the K-Mart sub on their menus. Social media creators The Tavern Twins visited Merl's Tavern in the Saginaw suburb of Carrollton.
The Merl's version has all the classic ingredients and adds mayonnaise. The biggest difference is the tavern version is toasted were the K-Mart subs were always served cold.
From the Tavern Twins Facebook page, here's a look at the K-Mart Sub being built:
