What is the Lake and Country Tour in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula?

There are many driving tours around Michigan. Likely the most widely known are the Great Lakes Circle Tour routes. Circle tours around Lakes Michigan, Erie, Huron and Superior are well marked across the state.

There are many lesser known driving tours as well. The state maintains 23 official byways - see them all below. There are many much lesser known drives as well. One across a secluded section of Michigan's Upper Peninsula is the Lake and Country Tour.

The Lake and County Tour spans two townships, L'Anse and Arvon, in Baraga County. The route is named, not surprisingly, for views along Lake Superior as well as the rugged country of the Huron Mountains.

The tour is an out-and-back loop that begins and ends in L'Anse.

The Path of the Northern Michigan Lake and Country Tour

The route is described as:

8-miles of pristine Lake Superior shoreline; passing by the old Ford company town of Pequaming; rolling through the historic Finnish, Swedish and Native American settlements of Aura, Skanee and Zeba; driving past the road leading to Mt. Arvon – Michigan’s highest natural point; as well as wandering past three different sets of waterfalls.

That's a pretty good summation of an Upper Peninsula experience.

The route begins along the L'Anse Bay/Keweenaw Bay of Lake Superior leaving L'Anse on Bay Shore Road and rides up to Pequaming. From there it's inland towards the small hamlets of the region travelling as far out at Skanee. From there the loop takes Skanee Road back into L'Anse.
