Politician Floats Proposal Renaming Another Great Lake that Borders Michigan
Because everything in 2025 needs to be political, there's no shortage or outrage or chest-thumping around the renaming of geographical features.
The renaming of the southern Gulf led to further re-naming scenarios like the tongue-in-cheek suggestion from the governor of Illinois to rename Lake Michigan in honor of the Land of Lincoln.

Another renaming ploy has been floated to rename Lake Erie as Lake Ohio. The idea came from former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy who is currently campaigning to earn the governorship of Ohio.
Ramaswamy was stumping with fellow Republicans in Lucas County in the Toledo area when he declared:
Does anyone think if there's a Lake Michigan there should be a Lake Ohio around here? I'm feeling that. We'll talk about that a little more as this campaign progresses.
Many on social media were quick to point to the linguistic oddity such a renaming would make.
Ohio comes from the Iroquois word Ohi'yo, which means "big river"
The state is named after the river, and the only reason we call it the "Ohio River" is because the settlers didn't understand that "river" was already in the word.
So, he wants to rename the lake to "Lake Big River"
There would certainly be other candidates should a renaming be considered. The largest city on the lake is Cleveland, so Lake Cleveland. There are two other large metro areas on either side of the lake, so Lake Detroit or Lake Buffalo could be in the running.

If Michigan wants in on the action, the state's key city on Lake Erie is Monroe, so what about Lake Monroe? It would honor a Founding Father and our 5th president, James Monroe.
Or, there is one other state with Lake Erie frontage: Pennsylvania. Perhaps the Keystone State would want to name the lake after its largest city on the lake, Erie, and call the body of water Lake Erie. Stranger things could happen.
