This Southern Michigan Intersection Confuses Even Long-time Drivers
This unassuming road through southern Michigan should be as unremarkable as any other. But there's an odd feature that often confuses even natives to the area.
The highway is M-86 though the St Joseph County seat of Centreville.

The quirk comes from the way M-86, the only highway crossing the village, makes a turn towards Three Rivers.
After leaving downtown on Main Street, M-86 makes a curve onto what will become Centreville-Constantine Road. Just a block past that curve, Main Street meets Burr Oak Street. M-86 leaves Main Street for Burr Oak Street and quickly beelines out of the village.
The curve, intersection and change in highways sets up a situation, seen above, were drivers heading east continuing on M-86 transferring from Main to Burr Oak streets do not stop while those continuing on Main Street must stop.
Coming the other way, seen below, drivers coming from Three Rivers need not stop at all whether continuing straight on Burr Oak Street (but leaving M-86) or turning left onto Main Street and continuing on M-86.

The design of the intersection may confuse a driver not familiar with the area by seeing the stop sign overhead that's not intended for them, but angled oddly due to the roads meeting at a non-square angle.
That's what causes some to question the intersection and its safety for those not from town.
