But have you ever given much thought to how exactly the mail comes to your home beyond your mail carrier walking to driving by?
The US Postal Service routes all mail through Processing and Distribution Centers and Sectional Center Facilities. All mail for a series of ZIP Codes go through a particular Sectional Center Facility or SCF.
There are 6 of these facilities across the state.

There are two of these processing centers in the Detroit area and regionally in Lansing, Grand Rapids, Traverse City and Iron Mountain.
All Mail Delivered in Michigan Goes Through one of These Facilities:
Traverse City serves all of northern Lower Michigan and the Eastern Upper Peninsula.
Known as the Upper Peninsula Mail Processing Center, this facility in Kingsford, adjacent to Iron Mountain serves all mail in the Western and Central UP. Mail intended for Sault Ste Marie and St Ignace areas are processed in Traverse City.
The 'Metroplex' facility is in Pontiac and serves much of Eastern Michigan north to nearly Alpena.
A facility in Detroit serves the city, Downriver communities and Southeast Michigan to roughly Hillsdale. It is the only regional facility in Michigan that handles out-of-state mail as this facility processes mail of all of Northwest Ohio from Toledo to the Indiana line.
The Lansing facility serves Mid-Michigan, the smallest geographic region of the state from roughly Mount Pleasant to Olivet.
All mail in West Michigan from south of Cadillac to the Indiana line passes through Grand Rapids.
