Michigan City is Not in Michigan and People Are Confused
Look at the sign above promoting Michigan City. You see it's artistically formed into a wave with a drawing of a lighthouse and directions to an arts district and lakeshore. Sounds like any touristy town in Michigan, doesn't it. And with that name you'd think it was.
But Michigan City is not in Michigan.

As many people, but not all, know Michigan City is in Northwest Indiana. And that's where the confusion begins.
A meme by local Facebook page CityByTheLake explains it well using the Washington's Dream sketch performed twice on Saturday Night Live by Nate Bargatze. In the bit Bargatze as the first president lays out a humorous vision for the new nation with lines like:
"We will have a game called football where we will throw the ball."
"It's called football but there is no kicking?"
"There will be a little kicking"
The Michigan City version:
"And we will call it Michigan City."
"Will it be the capital of Michigan?"
"No, it will be in Indiana."
Comments on the meme shared on Facebook add on more humor to the seemingly geographically misaligned city.
And put it really close to the border line so everyone gets confused
What time is it?
Nobody will know......
That joke about the time as the Michigan/Indiana state line at this point is also the line between the Central and Eastern time zones. It's very, very common when coordinating times with others to specify if you're talking "Indiana Time" or "Michigan Time."
And finally the joke could extend elsewhere in Northwest Indiana as well.
We will call it East Chicago.
Illinois?
No, Indiana.
