Over the last week, dairy farmers in Michigan began to do something that no dairy farmer wants to do, dump milk.

The decision to dump milk produced in the state was made by the Wisconsin-based Family Dairies USA Cooperative and the reason given was due to contracts with businesses and schools being canceled because of regional stay at home orders.  In addition to those orders being cancelled, the farmers don't have access to packaging for retail sales of their milk.

According to a report by Michigan Farmer News, the cooperative ordered 40% of the milk produced by farmers to be dumped until the contracts could be renewed or proper packaging for retail sales was made available to them.

It is currently unclear how badly this will affect the industry as a whole, but it is quite obvious that most farmers won't be able to sustain themselves if they are being asked to destroy up to 40% of product.
