
About ‘Michigan Nice’ – Do We Act Mean but Are Truly Nice?
There's something about the folks in the Midwest or Great Lakes, or however you define the region that Michigan belongs to. Like the term Minnesota Nice, Michiganders can also be said to have a niceness streak to them.
But is there a façade of meanness?

That's the supposition, or perhaps, sweeping generalization of a mapmaker who divided up the country into four quadrants along the lines of acting nice vs acting mean and being nice vs being mean.
Broadly defined, the northeastern quadrant, to which Michigan is included is said to act mean but truly be nice. To the south - the dividing line is somewhere between Indianapolis and Evansville/Louisville - the folks act nice but are truly mean.
Out west - the dividing line here splits in the middle of the Dakotas through the heart of Texas - northwesterners are said to act nice and truly be nice while those in the southwest are thought to act mean and truly be mean.

So, how would you define yourself? Almost anyone would want to say they act nice and are truly nice, so how would you classify your fellow Michiganders?
