
Is a ‘Pizza Pasty’ Truly a Michigan Thing?
There are foods that are just deeply associated with Michigan. One of those is the pasty. The meat, potato pasty pie is popular across the state but ubiquitous in the Upper Peninsula.
Pizza is a universal food. Detroit Pizza and chains like Domino's, Hungry Howie's, Little Caesars and Jet's are Michigan's contributions.

But a pizza pasty? It's a thing in Northern Michigan, but should it be? This video shows off the pizza and pasty mash-up from a pizzeria in Sault Ste. Marie - a community which just gave the world the 'Border War Pizza' in recognition of the recently unplesantries between the US and Canada played out with dough and cheese.

The video does acknowledge what should be obvious - a pizza pasty is just a calzone.
The video mentions Fatt Matt's as the provider of pizza pasties and indeed they are on the menu listed as such.
But it's not a 'Soo' thing. Guido's across town offers neither calzones nor pizza pasties.
Doing a little digging around the UP, we did find one other instance of the Pizza Pasty nomenclature from Seder's Pizza in Newberry.
Now the real question raised by the pizza pasty is why is no pizzeria doing it the other way and serving pizza topped with beef, potato rutabaga, carrot and onion over a gravy (or ketchup) sauce?
