Nearly all highways exist to connect you from one place to another. When you come to the end of the road, there's almost always somewhere else to go. Somewhere to turn. But there are parts of Michigan's highway system that don't leave you anywhere else to go - Michigan's dead end state highways.

It's not uncommon at all for local roads to meet dead ends, but for state and national highways, it is exceedingly rare, but they do exist.

Given Michigan's unique peninsular geography, perhaps it's not surprising to consider that there are highways that simply run out of land. Two of them, M-37 in the Old Mission Peninsula and US 41 at the tip of the Keweenaw do just that.

For other highways, they serve a state park and end at that park's entrance.

There are some highways that may appear on a map to dead end, but do carry on as local roads, and thus don't make this list.

Those highways include M-154 on Harsens Island. After crossing the ferry onto the island, the highway travels for several miles and ends where Green Road ends, but the roadway continues on several more miles at Bates Highway.

The same situation exists for M-134 on Drummond Island. While the highway designation ends, and unsigned local road continues on.

That case exists for many other highways like M-188 near Eaton Rapids where the local roadway designation ends at the VFW National Home while a local road continues on or M-152 which sees its official designation end at the Van Buren/Berrien County line, seemingly for no reason.
