If someone was asked to name a 'Tech' college of university, what's the first thing that comes to mind? Popular sports schools like Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech or Texas Tech? Or perhaps a well known academic institution like MIT, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Where would Michigan Tech rank in America's best known tech schools?

Not every state charters a technological school so from the jump, Michigan Tech is ahead of many other states in recognition. But being located in a distant and sparsely populated tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and having a smaller student population while fielding only a hockey team that has much of a national profile, is it fair to ask if Michigan Tech is the most overlooked Tech school in America?

The question came up on Reddit in the College Football subreddit, so perhaps that already tilts the survey towards the powerhouse football programs from tech schools in Texas, Virginia and Georgia.

How Well Known in Michigan Tech Nationally?

There was some love for Michigan Tech on the thread:

Michigan Tech - go huskies

I like this one. I want a hockey jersey

Houghton, the Paris of the UP!

I used to hang out with a Michigan Tech crowd right out of college. Do you guys still constantly talk about the Big Ten ruining college hockey?

Are There Lesser Known Tech Schools Across America Than Michigan Tech?

There are a few other Techs out there that may have levels of recognition similar to Michigan Tech. Consider Louisiana Tech in Ruston, New Mexico Tech in Socorro - technically the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. Of the public 'Tech' schools, perhaps the honor of the most obscure goes to Utah Tech. The school only earned its 'Tech' name in 2022 evolving from Dixie State University.

There's of course also a joke about an unnamed-state 'Tech' that is the archrival of 'State' in the popular and long-running Dr. Pepper Fansville advertising campaign. So perhaps, that is truly the most popular and best known Tech in America.
