
New Michigan Drivers: You Must Know These Particular Traffic Laws
You may think that you know just about every traffic law on the books. After all, you've passed Driver's Ed. You've been on the road for years without incident. Even so, there are some traffic law peculiarities that surprise some Michigan drivers.
The topic came up on the Michigan subreddit of Reddit recently when a new state resident asked, "just moved here; any traffic laws or unusual laws I need to know about?"

Friendly Michiganders were eager to chime in.

Traffic Law's New Drivers Need to Know Suggest By Michigan Drivers
- Right on red is fine unless marked otherwise.
- So are left turns on red in some situations.
- Many deer pay no heed to the designated deer crossing areas, and instead cross the road wherever they damn well please. Deer are most actively doing this in the mornings and evenings.
- Joke aside, even in cities like Midland and Portage where there are as much forest as there are subdivision, car-deer accidents are common.
- Southern drivers are often unprepared to clear snow and ice before heading out. Clear everything before you start your trip no matter how short.
- Motorcycles may not split a lane.
- Many intersections in large metros employ "Michigan Lefts." They're odd, but you'll get used to them.
- If coming from mountainous states where they may be common or even required, studded snow tires are not legal.
