Going to a Michigan State Park is an escape enjoyed by many Michigan families. After all, it's why so many pay to have a Recreation Passport added to their license plate tags.

There are several state parks in various stages of development across the state. Here are the likely next three you'll be able to visit.

Coldwater Lake State Park

Coldwater Lake is an official state park it's just not improved in any significant way. Located in far southern Michigan near the Indiana state line. The park has been a part of the DNR system since 1988 however it has never been developed. The parkland is a reserved 400 acres on the south shore of Coldwater Lake. Access is from Copeland Road and a very short drive from Exit 3 off I-69. Other than a tiny turnout dirt parking area and a few DNR signs, there is little to clue a traveler to the presence of a state park.

The last significant action taken at Coldwater Lake was a management plant to develop the park that's now a decade old having been agreed to in 2015.

Gete Mino Mshkiigan State Park

Another undeveloped state park is located a bit south of the Mackinac Bridge in Cheboygan County. This property is located along Mullet Lake and has a small beach. The land has an interesting history. It was originally timberland and owned by logging companies. The state took ownership in 1904 and within 10 years began selling off land to private owners. A century later a land conservancy based in Harbor Springs took ownership of the park.

Gete Mino Mshkiigan is now managed by the DNR. Similar to Coldwater Lake, it is largely undeveloped with no parking off of Straits Highway where the park is located nor are there any marked trails with easy beach access.

Unnamed Flint Park

The state DNR and Genesee County have partnered to create a new urban park of 230 acres along the Flint River. 2026 is the expected opening date. Much of the future park land is open public space even though it's not been fully developed.
