Michigan’s First Gluten-Free Brewery Opens Taproom in Grand Rapids
Beer City USA has its first gluten-free brewery and taproom! In fact, it's the first in the whole state!
More than a year ago we told you that Brewery Nyx, a completely gluten-free brewery, would be opening up a taproom in Grand Rapids' Roosevelt Park neighborhood.
Brewery Nyx at 506 Oakland Ave. SW held it's grand opening Saturday, July 9, 2022.
Owner Jessica Stricklen is originally from Grand Rapids. She moved to Portland and worked in the wine business .While she was out west, she saw the success of gluten-free breweries there and decided she wanted to open one in Michigan. She's been gluten free herself for about 10 years.
Stricklen told MiBiz her focus is making great-tasting beer:
“The majority of gluten-free beers available are mostly made from sorghum grain, which leads to sort of a bitter, metallic aftertaste that we’re going to avoid...We’re making great-tasting beer. It’s a premium brand because we have premium ingredients.”
According to Wood TV 8, Brewery Nyx began renovating the former furniture shop in southwest Grand Rapids in February 202. They began brewing and distributing gluten-free beer in December, which you can find at local retailers like Meijer and Bridge St. Market. It took a few additional months, but Brewery Nyx now has their taproom license.
Brewery Nyx is now open Thursday - Friday from 3p.m. to 7p.m. and and Saturday -Sunday from 1p.m. to 7p.m.
Brewery Nyx's gluten-free beer offerings include a Double IPA, Cherry Stout, Blonde, Lager, and a Salted Lime brew - You can check out their menu here.
