Murdered Gaines Township Child Identified as Investigation Continues
Authorities were called to a trailer in Gaines Township on Tuesday, where a 4-year-old boy was reported as not breathing. Sadly, the boy died at the hospital, and the Medical Examiner has determined the cause of death as blunt force trauma.
The boy has been identified as Giovanni Mejias, and the suspect is the boyfriend of the boy's mother, Elis Nelson Ortiz, who's in Kent County Sheriff's custody. He will be arranged on Thursday.
Authorities say the suspect was watching seven children under the age of 11 in the home at the time of the incident. It’s unclear if Child Protective Services has taken those children into custody.

The Michigan Office of Children’s Ombudsman is investigating Child Protective Services' involvement with the child and the family, hopefully to discover why this man was in charge of all these kids, and how this horrible thing could have happened.
The boy's father, Edwin Mejias, works at The Intersection, and the staff of the venue have stared a GoFundMe campaign to help Edwin and his family in this troubled time. If you can help, please do so. The people that work at The Intersection are all really good people, and it's great that they always come together for each other in hard times.
