It's almost come to be expected, air travel may well be a hassle. It's often a hurry-up-and-wait experience. But one flight may be very different from those that originate from other airports in Michigan.

The unique experience exists in Muskegon. The daily flight from Muskegon County Airport to O'Hare in Chicago is so short, there isn't time to offer food and beverage service while the plane is a cruising altitude.

Rather, snacks are offered to travelers before they take off. The airport highlighted the service on Facebook recently.

Because the flight across Lake Michigan takes less than a half hour there simply wasn't time to reach a cruising altitude, offer snacks, have them eaten then come back for trash before the plane needed to begin its preparation for landing.

One commenter on Facebook asked with such a short flight, why bother with snacks? The airport's reply (and the emphasis below is ours):

lots of reasons. It’s free, saves time on short connections, beats paying $5 for a Snickers at O’Hare.

Totally valid reasons. And notice, those snacks include full size candy. No 'fun sizes' here.

Commercial air traffic to and from Muskegon currently includes just the daily connection to O'Hare.

The 'grab a snack before you head out' concept is also practiced, as shared anecdotally, further up the coast at Manistee. That airport, also with a single connection to O'Hare, a likely similar flight time, offers a snack before passengers board.

Flying here and these you likely give very little thought to the logistics of air travel. But there's an entire infrastructure and language to commercial aviation. One piece of that is airport codes. Some codes are iconic like LAX for Los Angeles or have come to identify a city as in PDX for Portland. What about airport codes in Michigan? Here they are for every commercial airport in the state.
