The Hum is an unexplained phenomena heard in many places including Michigan. It's often described as a constant low rumble.

Residents in Metro Detroit may be familiar with the concept of the Windsor Hum. This low rumble was solved after many years and attributed to industrial work on Zug Island in Detroit.

How exactly to describe The Hum and its affect? This comment on Reddit gives a solid summation:

Anyone else hear it? The phenomenon of a low frequency humming noise at night. It is constant for hours on end and sounds like a car idling or a plane hovering.

It’s definitely outdoors as it’s noticeably louder when I open the window. Tonight I’ve been hearing it since 2:30am in the rural northeast of the United States.

Is it pipeline drilling? Underground military operations?

How can we demand answers about this unexplained noise pollution from our government?

I dislike it so much. I sense in my bones that it’s human-made and not naturally occurring.

And Michigan residents are not immune to hearing the same phenomenon:

Pulsing vibrating sound. It’s frustrating. I live near Lake Michigan so I wonder if it…reverberates or something because it’s (semi) loud & clear. I can pick it up on audio, I sent a snapchat to my friend the other night and he could hear it clearly. It happens day and night. Having the window closed only helps a little bit apparently...It spooks me so I wish there was an explanation for it.

And if you've never experienced it. Here's a recording of The Hum. Notice how the device begins to malfunction as the recording progresses:

I tried recording the sound again and i guess my phone randomly started recording a buzzing sound? that’s not what i heard while recording this, also the video becomes wavy, weird.

So what is the Hum? It remains a deep mystery. A World Hum Map has been created to document reports of the Hum. In Michigan, Detroit, Grand Rapids and Muskegon are hum hot spots.
