Three Men Tried To Break Out Of Newaygo County Jail
"Alone in the dark with nothing but your thoughts, time can draw out like a blade"-Red Redding.
Taken from the Shawshank Redemption playbook, 3 men in a Newaygo County Jail tried to tunnel out. Timothy Calicutt, Victor Garcia, and Jaron Morgan are all charged with conspiring to escape custody and aiding and abetting an attempted escape.
Fox 17 reports that the 3 men conspired to enter a locked utility hatch and a hole in the drywall in the ceiling of their cell and used improvised tools and contraband to damage the building in an attempt to escape.
It wasn't a poster of Rita Hayworth, Marylin Monroe, or Raquel Welch that the inmates used to cover their nefarious activities but rather a blanket. The men would take turns holding the blanket and entering the hatch.
It was not a rock hammer the inmates used to scrape away soapstone. The Newaygo County suspects fashioned tools to use in their escape from wood, metal, a pipe, and other items they had access to in their cell.
Court documents say Calicutt laid on his back on a top bunk bed and used his feet to press on the ceiling beneath the area where the suspects attempted their escape. While he was doing that, another inmate, Garcia, held up a blanket to hide Calicutt from the surveillance camera while he entered the hatch.
While in the ceiling, the inmates cut and damaged ductwork, a brick wall, and a plywood wall. If convicted, the men would face charges that carry a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment and $250,000 in fines.
