Smog Division?! An NFL Fan’s Bold Realignment Plan for Detroit and Great Lakes Teams
The Detroit Lions play in arguably the most storied and respected division in pro football, the NFC North. Consisting of division rivals Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings, the football played here epitomizes the gritty characteristics of the host cities and fanbases.
Proposals to realign the NFL's divisions, whether seriously considered by owners or fan-based fantasies, would do well to think long and hard before ever breaking up this division.
One proposal, coming from a fan on Reddit's NFL2 subreddit reimagines the league's 8 divisions with the Detroit Lions separating from the rest of the NFC North to join a humorously named Smog Division.

In addition to Detroit, the Smog Division would contain teams from the Rust Belt: Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers.
It's actually not a bad division and the Lions and Bills share a deep and rich history.
As for the rest of the NFC North, Indianapolis joins Chicago, Green Bay and Minnesota in an aptly named Ice Division.

Other fan proposals have called for the break-up of the NFC North. Another fan split the 8 teams in question above the exact same way but called them Great Lakes East and Great Lake West divisions.
