Notre Dame Is Embroiled In A Leggings War
A letter to the editor from the mother of a student has prompted a backlash at Notre Dame.
Men! Control yourselves! Women are going to wear leggings and you're going to get turned on, you'll just have to live with it.
A mother of a male student wrote a letter to the student newspaper at Notre Dame University just across the border in South Bend (delightful Michiana!).
In it, she implores female students to stop wearing tight leggings, because it unnecessarily turns on male students like her son (who is probably pretty embarrassed by Mom right about NOW).
The Letter reads, in part:
Leggings are so naked, so form fitting, so exposing. Could you think of the mothers of sons the next time you go shopping and consider choosing jeans instead? Let Notre Dame girls be the first to turn their backs(ides) on leggings. You have every right to wear them. But you have every right to choose not to. Thanks for listening to the lecture. Catholic moms are good at those!
Well, that lit the fuse on a debate about everything from modesty to male self control.
One woman commented, "As a 'Catholic mother' of two young women in their 20s, I am exhausted by the instructions and rules and warnings I am constantly having to give my daughters to protect them from your sons. Men and boys need to learn to restrain themselves in the world, to control their impulses, to learn that the world will not be perfectly paved in front of them and may not be 'legging-free.'"
Another said, "I am also tired of moms of sons spending so much time and energy focused on what young women are doing."
Noting that White asked women to wear jeans instead, another woman wrote, "I'm pretty sure I have jeans that make my 'backside' look better than my leggings so be careful what you wish for."
Another person simply left a Bible verse as a comment: "'And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away.' Matthew 18:9" she wrote.
In a humorous comment, one woman wrote, "I am disgusted by men with hairy gross toes who wear open-toed sandals, but I CHOOSE NOT TO LOOK. Wow! Can it be that simple?"
One man commented, "Maryann, thank you for reminding me why I left the Catholic Church years ago and why I will never, ever, ever return."
