While of course no place on earth would ever be safe if nuclear war ever broke out (80s kids learned in War Games that the only way to win a thermonuclear war is not to play the game). There may be places in Michigan that appear to be safe from a direct nuclear strike.

But safe from a strike certainly don't mean safe from fall out, for what that's worth.

Based on a map created in 2015, credited to Halcyon Maps and shared widely on Reddit, there is very little threat of a direct nuclear strike in nearly all of northern Michigan.

Draw a diagonal line from roughly Bay City to Grand Rapids and there are no major strike zones anywhere to the north.

In fact, much of the northern Great Lakes from Northern Michigan to Wisconsin and Minnesota are in the clear. A target in Green Bay shows little fall out and not drifting north.

The map proports to show the effects of a full scale nuclear exchange on the United States with civilian, military and infrastructure targets.

It's interesting to think of a location like Camp Graying in Northern Michigan not being included on the map nor a key piece of infrastructure like the Mackinac Bridge, the Soo Locks or International Bridge at Sault Ste Marie.

Maybe Sault Ste Marie is a location to consider for a bug-out. Popular Science magazine once predicted the far northern Michigan city would have the America's best climate and best city it live in come the year 2100.
