One Hit Wonder Weds Night – 1979 – on 98.7 WFGR
Interesting that the last year of the 1970s created the most one hit wonders of that decade, surpassing 1970 by two. 1979 produced 15 one hit wonders and tonight it's ONE HIT WONDER WEDS NIGHT SHIFT with Craig Allen starting at 7:00 p.m. on 98.7 WFGR.
Steve Forbert – "Romeo’s Tune": This song made it debut on the charts in December of 1979, but peaked at #11 in 1980. I for one am surprised that Steve Forbert didn't have another hit - hearing him alongside Tom Petty on either WGRD or WZZR 95.7 (Now Mix 95.7) where I worked on the radio in 1980 back in the day. Steve had the right sound.
Buggles - "Video Killed the Radio Star": The song that kicked off MTV as their first video this week back in 1980. Funny, radio plays more music than MTV does now. The Buggles were formed by Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes. Sound familiar? Yep they joined YES in the '80s and a year later kicked off supergroup ASIA.
Nick Lowe – "Cruel to Be Kind": Here's another artist that surprised me to only have one hit. Nick from England would go on to be a producer for Elvis Costello and Graham Parker. What you may not remember is he was married to Carlene Carter for about 11 years. "Cruel To Be Kind" hit #12 this week in 1979.
John Stewart – "Gold": John, not related to Rod Stewart or Jon Stewart the former TV host/comedian. John is from San Diego and at one point was a member of the Kingston Trio and later released a song with Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham called "Midnight Wind". His biggest hit "Gold" hit top five in May of 1979.
Cheryl Lynn – "Got To Be Real": Here's a little known fact - she was discovered after performing on "The Gong Show". Evidently she didn't get gonged on the show hosted by Chuck Barris. Cheryl is from LA and her song got all the way up to #12.
We hope you enjoy the artists who only had lightning strike once in their careers on The Night Shift with Craig Allen airing every weeknight from 7 to Midnight on 98.7 WFGR.
