West Michigan is a pretty safe place to live. At least those of us who live here tend to think so. But, the website SafeWise.com just released a list of the twenty safest cities in the state of Michigan, and only one West Michigan city made the list.

SafeWise based their list on the latest FBI crime statistics (from 2015), and it seems that most of the safest places to live in the state are on the east side.

SafeWise says that the cities on the list have lower instances of property and violent crimes that the state and national average. In fact, some of them have very little crime at all:

Four of these cities reported absolutely no violent crimes, according to the FBI’s most recent data, and 95% had zero incidents of murder or nonnegligent manslaughter. Additionally, eight of these safe cities reported no murders and no incidents of rape.

So, which West Michigan location made the list? Gaines Township. They came in at number 13 on the list, falling ten spots from their number 3 spot on the list last year.

Gaines Township's rate of violent crime per 1,000 people was 0.00, while their rate of property crime per 1,000 was 5.31.

Surprisingly, only one city/township from the Upper Peninsula made the list. Kinross Township on the eastern end of the U.P.
