Red Cross of Michigan Desperately Needs Type O Blood
American Red Cross of Michigan is putting out the call for O Positive and O Negative blood.
In a Tweet June 9, The Red Cross says hospital demand for Type O blood has outpaced donations.
Anyone with Type O blood who is able is encouraged to make a donation as soon as possible. You can make an appointment here.
If you've ever wondered why Type O blood seems to be in high demand, Type O Positive blood is the most common blood type and and Type O Negative is the universal blood type.
According to The Red Cross,
O negative is the most common blood type used for transfusions when the blood type is unknown. This is why it is used most often in cases of trauma, emergency, surgery and any situation where blood type is unknown.... Type O positive blood is given to patients more than any other blood type, which is why it’s considered the most needed blood type. 38% of the population has O positive blood, making it the most common blood type.
