Two Christmases ago I got a paper shredder as a gift, and I kid you not that is still one of the greatest gifts I've ever received. It has changed my life!

You know how it goes... between mail, bills, random paperwork, receipts, etc. they all start to pile up and take up space. Well, if you're feeling overwhelmed with the overflow this is the weekend to get rid of it all!

Lake Michigan Credit Union is hosting 'Shred Your Stuff Day' on Saturday, April 17 from 8 am to 12p for the public, meaning you don't have to be a member of the bank. The event is being hosted at the [newly-renamed] ballpark at 4500 W. River Dr. in Comstock Park. You are allowed to bring six boxes worth of shreddable documents and employees will dispose of them safely, and for free.

LMCU partnered with West Michigan Document Shredding for the event who will also be collecting old computer hard drives from people.

When you pull up to the credit union you're asked to wear a mask and stay in your vehicle. Have your boxes in your trunk and an employee will take them out for you.

Not only will it feel good to get rid of all that clutter but it's also an excellent way to protect yourself from fraud, as opposed to just throwing your stuff in the trash that has your personal information on it. A representative for the credit union told WZZM that this is their way of helping the community stay safe.

In the height of COVID, we know that fraud is even more prevalent than it was before and so this is an opportunity for us.

If you can't make it to Saturday's, LMCU has other "Shred Your Stuff" dates planned in this summer:

  • May 1 8:30a-10:30a at LMCU's branch in Holland
  • May 1 1p-3p at LMCU's Muskegon branch
  • May 15 9a-11a at Portage branch
