97.9 WGRD

Forty-five-teams. Five rinks. Three days over one weekend. One park in Grand Rapids. That pretty much sums up the WGRD Pond Hockey Classic 2015, which opened Friday night under the lights.

97.9 GRD Rocks will host the fourth annual WGRD Pond Hockey Classic, presented by Labatt Blue and Dematic. More than 40 teams will play on the frozen surface at Richmond Park in Grand Rapids starting Friday night (Jan. 23) and running through Sunday, Jan. 25. Division finals will be the afternoon of Jan. 25.

Josh Kukla, who leads Grandville High School boys' bowling squad and is the defending MHSAA Division I singles champion, is this week's Meijer-97.9 WGRD High School Athlete of the Week.

Tyree Jackson, who led Mona Shores High School's football team to a 12-2 season and an MHSAA Division 2 state runner-up finish, is this week's Meijer-97.9 WGRD High School Athlete of the Week.

East Grand Rapids girls' swimming and diving's Emily Converse and Gabby Higgins, who each captured two MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division 3 individual state titles in addition to being on two winning relays in leading the Pioneers to a repeat state championship in Oakland, are this week's Meijer-97.9 WGRD High School Athlete of the Week co-honorees.

Holland High School girls' swimming and diving's Taylor Garcia, who captured two MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division 2 girls' swimming and diving individual state titles last week, is this week's Meijer-97.9 WGRD High School Athlete of the Week honoree.
