Why wait? Summer's just around the corner, but once Memorial Day hits, the traffic slowly gets thicker and the crowds are larger. That's why you have to go up north NOW, before the dummies get there.

1. The Black Flies aren't around yet. Nothing sucks more than the dreaded BLACK FLIES, who dig into your skin and make it feel like you're being rolled on a pin cushion. Guess what? Black flies don't appear until later this month and then they don't get thick until June. A trip north now means no flies.

2. Waterfalls are flowing at peak volume. The recent rains and the melt off in the Upper Peninsula means Michigan's waterfalls are at their peak. Here's a list of some of the better ones to visit. Bring your camera, but be careful, heavy spring water flows can be dangerous.

3. There's a beauty in solitude. I ventured up to Silver Lake on the first weekend in May last year, and I literally had the place to myself. Nothing's better than a hike along a vacant sand dune that's usually covered in dune buggies.

4. There's no traffic. No one traditionally heads up until later n the month, so you'll have most of the two lane roads to yourself. And there's higher speed limits on some two lane highways. And while not everything will be open, most businesses do get an early start to the season in the resort towns.

5. Nature puts on a show of a different color. Everyone knows about the fiery beauty of Michigan in autumn, but are you aware of the show Michigan puts up in the springtime? Pastels, bright yellows and subtle greens make the journey north worth the photo op.
