Very few in Michigan's Upper Peninsula likely remember or were ever aware of a hidden US Navy site south of Marquette used to communicate with submarines that were submerged anywhere around the Earth.

The facility, one of two in the nation, was a set of miles-long antennas that transmitted messages in extremely low frequency or ELF. That transmission method gave its name to the structure as they were known as ELF faculties.

The Michigan location, known as the Humboldt Site due to its location in Humboldt Township south of the hamlet of Republic.

The site was decommissioned in 2004. It was sold to Humboldt Township and later to a private owner.

The long clear terrain that can be seen to the west of the facility is cleared land for the antenna. They are said to resemble standard power lines but rather than supply power, the lines were the antenna that broadcast the ELF messages.

Project ELF sent messages to submerged vessels. Due to the limitations of the technology, while the frequencies could span the globe and sink to the depths of the submarines, the transmissions

could only send short-coded text messages at a very low data rate. These signals were used to summon specific vessels to the surface to receive longer operational orders by ordinary radio or satellite communication.

Just how janky was the communication? It was said to take 15 minutes to transmit a 3 letter code message from the Michigan site to a submarine.

The Michigan site had one north-south antenna that ran 28 miles. While two 14 mile antenna ran of of the longer line. The overall structure resembled the letter F.

The ELF facility was mentioned by a commenter on social media recently when we published an article about the phenomena known as The Hum, a persistent low rumble experienced by many with an unexplained cause.
