A West Michigan Freeway Project Incomplete For 60 Years Will Finally Be Finished in 2025
There's a glaring omission to West Michigan's freeway system and after 60 years, it will finally be completed in 2025 when the state will construct a full interchange where US-131 meets Business US-131 north of Kalamazoo.
When the freeway was constructed in the mid-1960s, there was only a partial interchange built.

Drivers in southbound US-131 could access the Kalamazoo business loop but northbound drivers could not while those on the business loop could only enter US-131 heading north and not south.
The rationale at the time was to provide industrial traffic rapid passage to move between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids. However, the shortsightedness by state highway planners at the time put strain on the surface streets leaving downtown Kalamazoo to the west as the only way to access US-131.

Beginning in 2025 work will begin on completing the interchange which will allow full access between the business loop and US-131.
A Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson shared with WOOD-TV that the groundbreaking for the project is slated for spring 2025 and will take roughly a year to complete. The timeframe is quicker than similar projects on already completed roadways since the ramps being constructed will be new and no traffic will need to be rerouted.
