2022 Michigan Winter

Michigan winters are different every year but one thing that is common, the Mitten state gets its fair share of snow.

2022 had its moments as far as snow but was really considered pretty mild compared to past winters.

The average snowfall for Grand Rapids is 64.2 inches and that seems like a lot compared to the rest of the United States averaging around 27.8 inches.

What Part of Michigan Receives the Most Snowfall?

There is one area of Michigan that gets more than its fair share of snow and that is the Keweenaw Peninsula. They typically get around 270 inches of snow on average per season. That's a lot of freaking snow.

My best friend lives in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and he bases how bad his winter is on how many times he has to climb up on the roof to shovel it off. My buddy, Curt said, "Ya know Tommy, I was only up on da roof 3 times this season, it was cold but a mild winter in my book. A couple of years ago I was up da roof 8 times...now dat's a winter." Roof shoveling is metric for measuring snow us flatlanders in West Michigan don't have to worry about most years.

The Keweenaw Peninsula surpassed not only the yearly average of 270 inches but recently crossed over the 300-inch mark with its most recent snowfall of 16 inches. The crazy thing about the region is there is still more snow to come.

WOOD reported that the executive director of the Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau Brad Barnett said, "Any time you pass the 300-inch mark, it's a big deal. That's 25 feet of snow in one season. And this year, we didn't get much thaw, so there's still a lot of snow on the ground."

If you are into snowmobiling, there is still plenty of opportunities left on the Keweenaw Peninsula which already has snow with another possible 30 to 40 inches to fall in March and April.

There are over 230 miles of snowmobile trains running from southern Houghton County all the way to Copper Harbor.
