What, You Thought Meryl Streep Wasn’t Going to Be an Oscar Presenter?
Meryl Streep is getting another opportunity to spit some political fire all over the Dolby Theatre on Sunday. Today the Academy revealed that yes, of course Streep would be among the presenters at this year’s Oscars ceremony, probably hoping for another rousing speech from the actress who’s made it known that she won’t take any nonsense from anyone, not even from the highest office in the land.
Last time Streep took the stage at an awards show, it was to receive the lifetime achievement award at this year’s Golden Globes, and she certainly didn’t hold back during her acceptance speech. It prompted Donald Trump himself to call her “overrated” in a retaliatory tweet, and Robert De Niro to pen Streep a letter of support and solidarity. Many praised her heated diatribe, and others rolled their eyes at yet another Hollywood elite preaching to the choir. We don’t know if she’ll launch a similar tirade on Sunday night, but one thing’s for sure: her bit will certainly be worth tuning in to.
Other Oscar presenters, per THR, include Oscar winners Matt Damon, Faye Dunaway, Warren Beatty and Octavia Spencer, nominees Ryan Gosling, Salma Hayek, Dev Patel, and Taraji P. Henson, and actors Jason Bateman, Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Aniston and Sofia Boutella. The 89th Academy Awards will be broadcast this Sunday at 8:30 pm EST.
