Every year, it's the same story. Michigan is among the states the most people are leaving from, and yet I'm still here, and you're still here.

United Van Lines Survey Shows Michigan Is The Fourth Most Moved Out Of State

It's a broken record we hear every year, Michigan is among the states with the most people fleeing it. In 2022, we are the fourth most fled state according to a recent survey by United Van Lines.

The most popular state to move OUT of was New Jersey (for the fifth year in a row). Illinois was second, followed by New York, Michigan, Wyoming, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Louisiana, and California.

There's a lot that goes into a decision to leave a state, particularly, your home state.

The survey that goes along with United’s study gives insight into why people make the moves they do and this year, it shows that more Baby Boomers and Gen Xers moved than any other age group. People aged 55 and older made up more than half (55%) of all inbound United Van Lines moves in 2022. The top reasons for the moves include wanting to be closer to family (35%), a new job or company transfer (33%) and retirement (20%).

So Where Is Everyone Moving To?

I get it, the Mitten State ain't for everybody.

Michigan has a hard time retaining people. Older folks don't want to stay here because of our crap winter weather and new, lucrative jobs aren't exactly popping up all over, so young people may be drawn elsewhere.

So where are people fleeing to?

Americans are continuing to move to lower-density areas around the country, including Vermont, which saw the highest percentage (77%) of people moving there for the second year in a row.

They're followed by Oregon, Rhode Island (?), South Carolina, Delaware (?), North Carolina, Washington, D.C., which counted as a state, South Dakota, New Mexico . . . and Alabama.

Let me just say this: I'm not leaving, so if you're looking for someone to shut off the lights after everyone has left, I'll volunteer my services.

It's Illegal To Throw These Items In The Garbage In Michigan

I went right to the source at Michigan's state website to find out if I can throw regular household batteries away in the garbage, among other items. It turns out there's quite a bit of illegal things to throw away which may not impact all of us, but may come in handy for certain business owners, as they point out
