Witch’s Hat Depot is Michigan’s Most Treasured Train Station
Imagine a bygone era of rail travel between towns and seeing this unique train depot as you pulled into the city of South Lyon in southeast Michigan. Known as the Witch's Hat Depot, the building was once a bustling passenger depot.
The building dates back to the late 1800s and was part of the Pere Marquette and Grand Trunk Western rail lines.

The nickname for the building comes, not surprisingly, from the rounded end of the depot and the conical roof which builds to a tip and certainly looked like a witch's hat.
The passenger service ended during the 1950s and the building fell into disuse. The local government acquired the building in the 1970s according to an historical marker on the grounds.

Interestingly, the entire building was moved away from its former location along the rail line to a dedicated park location. Today it is used as a museum and community center.
The building is south of downtown South Lyon adjacent to McHattie Park and accessed via Dorothy Street from Lafayette Street/Pontiac Trail.
The Witch's Hat has become an emblem of the city with a neighboring brewery taking the name Witch's Hat Brewing and a nickname of 'The Hat.'
